Occuring pulsations in piping systems always result from an pulsation exciting fluid machine or component and the system response. Thus, for a reliable design of piping plants machinery and piping need to be simulated simultaneously. A 3D simulation of the whole plant is not feasible due to high computational costs. Thus, machinery needs to be modeled in 3D and the attached plant in 1D. A method for coupling 3D finite volume domains and 1D finite difference domains with as little as possible interface reflections is developed. The basic principle of the coupling method is the adaption of wave propagation properties in the coupled domains. By an analysis and specific adaption of the (inherent and inevitable) spectral errors of the coupled numerical schemes interface reflections can be minimised.
